Your Windows laptop's USB-C port does 5 things you've never tried

If you restrict your computer's USB-C port to plugging in a charger or a basic thumb drive, you're wasting your hardware's potential. That tiny oval connector is one of the most useful ports any device can have. It can instantly transfer large files between PCs, run an Android desktop, and give a thin ultrabook access to hardware it was never designed to support, and so much more you're missing out on.

Connect two Windows laptops with a single USB-C cable

Create a private high-speed link that leaves Wi-Fi behind

For most people, moving files between computers requires using a cloud storage service, a flash drive, or an external SSD. These are three things you can skip as long as both laptops have Thunderbolt.

This connection technology, using a Thunderbolt-certified cable, allows compatible PCs to create a direct, high-speed network connection. This is akin to having a private network between these computers, bypassing your router and Wi-Fi.

Intel's Thunderbolt Share software makes this technology easier to use on compatible devices. It bypasses the need to configure network settings and offers a clean interface where you can simply drag and drop files and share screens. It even allows you to control both devices with a single keyboard and mouse.

Intel rates Thunderbolt Share at up to 20Gbps on Thunderbolt 4 and 40Gbps on Thunderbolt 5 when you do this kind of networking between PCs. Your typical home Wi-Fi network doesn't come close to this, which gives this kind of connection the advantage when migrating to a new device or moving extra-large files.

Also note that while regular USB-C cables fit the same port, only a Thunderbolt-certified cable enables this feature.

Plug desktop-class hardware into an ultrabook

Capabilities that ordinary USB-C ports simply don't have

One of the most significant functions Thunderbolt serves is exposing PCIe to hardware outside your laptop. For context, PCIe is the connection desktops use internally for graphics cards and fast storage.

In the same way any other accessory plugs in, this technology lets you access external GPU enclosures, along with capture cards, professional audio interfaces, 10Gb Ethernet adapters, and NVMe SSDs. This implies that your modest laptop with entry-level integrated graphics can suddenly become a real desktop-class powerhouse.

If you do this, remember that the external GPU's bandwidth is limited over a single cable, so performance won't match a desktop GPU. Still, it's a useful upgrade.

Some USB4 computers also support PCIe tunneling, but checking the computer's specifications before making a purchase is crucial, as this is not consistent across all devices.

Your laptop can charge another gadget while charging itself

USB Power Delivery decides where the electricity should go

While certain USB-C ports do one job at a time, usually taking power in or sending it out, some USB-C ports are smarter and more efficient.

On compatible devices, USB Power Delivery allows two devices to negotiate which supplies power and which receives it. While your device charges from a dock or monitor, it can charge your phone or earbuds from a second port.

It goes even further on some devices, where the Always On USB charging feature allows a port to stay powered even when the laptop is asleep or, in certain cases, fully shut down. This feature is particularly handy when you're stuck with a single outlet while traveling.

Look for a battery or lightning bolt icon next to the port, as manufacturers use this to visually distinguish these ports.

That said, this feature seriously depends on the specific laptop, the amount of power your charger can spare, and whether the cable you use supports the required Power Delivery standard.

A compatible Android phone can borrow your laptop setup

Unlock a desktop experience that's far more than screen mirroring

When you plug your phone into another device, the goal is usually to charge it or transfer some data, often photos. However, this same cable can do much more for some Android phones.

Samsung Galaxy devices that run the Samsung DeX software platform, for instance, allow your compatible phone to become a small desktop when you plug your phone into a supported monitor or monitor dock via USB-C. This desktop includes resizable app windows, mouse support, and keyboard shortcuts, rather than scaled-up versions of your phone screen. It becomes much easier to reply to messages, and it feels natural to drag and drop files between your apps on the big screen.

While Samsung is a great example, this feature isn't exclusive to it, but the level of support depends on the model and manufacturer. The experience is not always the same.

One cable can transform your entire desk

All you need is a USB-C dock

A USB-C port may seem like just another connector, but with the right hardware, a single USB-C connection can carry power, video, and data simultaneously. This means that with just one plugged-in cable, your laptop can concurrently:

  • Charge
  • Power two external monitors
  • Enjoy a wired internet connection
  • Wake up a keyboard, mouse, and webcam
  • Have an external SSD available

This kind of setup makes it easy to leave your desk. Simply unplug your cable, pick up your laptop, and leave the rest behind.

Identical-looking USB-C ports on a laptop don't always have the same capabilities.

The golden rule: check specs before you buy

For all these features, the common disclaimer is that they depend on what your laptop's ports actually support, since USB-C refers only to the connector's shape, not its capabilities.

The trick is to spend a few minutes verifying your laptop's specifications before you buy a Thunderbolt dock, an external GPU, or invest in a more expensive cable. You should look for a Thunderbolt logo next to the port or USB4 branding. Looking through the manufacturer's support page will also help you avoid purchasing an accessory that your laptop can't support. More importantly, this little research can also reveal which port on your computer is the most capable.
