Windows is Now an iPhone, iPad and Mac App
Movies, TV shows, music and even video games are just the tip of the cloud streaming iceberg. One day, even the idea of installing Windows to your device could seem archaic, and Microsoft is taking another step towards that future with its new Windows app, which gives mobile devices access to a full Windows PC in the cloud.
Revealed during Microsoft's annual Ignite IT conference, the Windows app serves as a central hub for remotely accessing a copy of Windows. Reserved for business and enterprise customers for now, the app has options to connect to services including "Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, Microsoft Dev Box, Remote Desktop Services, and remote PCs." Devices that can run the app include other Windows PCs, iPhones, iPads, and even Apple computers running macOS.
There's no Android support mentioned yet, but those who can't (or don't want to) install the app can instead log in to windows.cloud.microsoft to stream to their browser.
The app promises a full fledged experience, allowing users to access and switch between multiple accounts. There's also support for multiple monitors with varying resolutions, and some technical wizardry allows accessories like webcams, external drives and printers to work on your cloud PC.
The Windows app is currently available only as a prerelease preview for Microsoft's enterprise and business customers, with no mention of when it will be made more widely available to general consumers. It follows a leaked presentation from June that seemed to indicate Microsoft might want to move Windows entirely to the cloud in the future.
