Why your next stove may come with batteries included
Sixty years ago, giant mainframes dominated computing. Today, everyone has a supercomputer in their pocket. Something similar may be about to happen to our electrical grid.
At the moment, we depend on massive centralized power plants analogous to the old, room-size mainframes. But a new generation of household appliances, like stoves with batteries inside, could distribute energy sources all around us, creating a cleaner, more efficient grid.
So far, only a tiny number of these appliances are on sale: a few induction stoves and AC models powered by batteries big enough to last a few hours to a few days. Yet, within a few years, water heaters, dryers and heat pumps may all come with batteries included that store electricity and talk to the grid. “Everything that has a plug has a battery attached to it,” said Wally Nowinski of Impulse Labs, a battery-powered stovetop start-up.
For the right homeowner, it could make sense today. The reason is that the value of storing power inside the home has risen, for both grid operators and people just trying to cook or stay cool.
Appliances with built-in batteries can charge from the grid when power is cheap and clean, soaking up wind and solar energy, and draw down when it’s dear. They can also help homeowners avoid expensive, 240-volt wiring upgrades for high-powered devices like stoves. Battery-enhanced appliances run off a standard 120-volt outlet and tap their energy stores for extra juice when needed. Utilities can draw on these appliances to curb demand at peak times, or even pay homeowners to send electricity back to the grid.
For now, the challenge for homeowners is cost. Appliance batteries are roughly where Tesla was in 2008, when it released its first car, the Roadster. The company set out to prove that people would pay a premium for an unfamiliar but attractive technology, building a path toward the mass market.
It worked. Tesla’s modified $99,000 Lotus, powered by repurposed laptop batteries, led to the far more affordable and (still) wildly popular Models 3 and Y.
Today, Impulse and Copper, a competing start-up making induction stoves, are betting that sizzling-hot performance, without rewiring your kitchen, will attract buyers despite hefty price tags of around $6,000 to $7,000, roughly double the cost of a high-end gas or electric stove.
That, they argue, could pave the way for mass adoption as the cost of adding batteries — which have seen prices fall more than 90 percent since 2010 — declines further. Onboard storage could then become a standard feature, not a luxury.
“As a start-up, we’re making a product that’s designed for people to fall in love with,” said Sam Calisch, Copper’s co-founder and CEO. “Later, by working with others, we will make products that are more optimized for cost.”
I took a look at the Copper and Impulse battery-powered induction stoves and asked the experts what they portend about the future of home appliances.
Copper’s Charlie range and Impulse’s cooktop are sleek appliances that would look at home in a professional chef’s kitchen.
Charlie is the more traditional of the pair, with a full 30-inch electric oven and cooktop, in stainless steel. It feels warm and classic. The Impulse Cooktop looks modernist and tech-forward. It boasts magnetic knobs that pull off for cleanup and 10,000 watts of peak power per burner that can hold temperatures to a single degree. Both take wireless software updates.
The first thing you notice when cooking on these products is the blistering speed. Copper can boil one liter of water in about two minutes, far quicker than traditional gas, by drawing power from its battery. The Impulse is even faster: A single burner briefly draws 10,000 watts, bringing one liter of water to boil in just about 40 seconds. Once they reach the required temperature, both companies told me energy demand falls to what a traditional 120-volt outlet can easily handle.
In practice, depending on a battery is rarely a limiting factor. Calisch said there’s plenty of time to recharge, even when things simmer or roast all day. In a study of 32 affordable-housing apartments with Copper’s Charlie commissioned by a utility, the 5 kWh battery fell below 1 percent only once during seven months over 6,175 documented cooking events.
There are other perks: The batteries inside these appliances can also power several meals worth of cooking during power outages and prevent the need for costly wiring and panel upgrades for conventional ranges or stovetops, potentially saving thousands of dollars (or millions in multifamily buildings).
Both companies have bigger dreams: a network of millions of appliance batteries in American homes that silently cycle on and off to supply homeowners’ energy needs for cooking, and even feed power to the grid for a fee at times of high demand. RMI, a U.S.-based clean-energy think tank, categorized more than a dozen ways batteries can support homeowners and the energy system, from buying cheap power at night and then using it during ultrahigh peak hours to joining virtual power plants.
The virtue of this approach is its simplicity.
Installing a home battery system costs more than $1,000 per kilowatt-hour installed, after labor, wiring, permitting and other soft costs. That’s nearly 10 times more than the $70 per kWh cost of the stationary battery packs themselves. Adding the same storage into a stove, dryer or AC unit at the factory, and relying on established sales and distribution channels, costs very little.
“We want to be deploying batteries at more like the hardware cost and less like the bloated installed cost that we see in the residential storage market today,” said Calisch. “By attaching to an appliance, we make it as cheap and scalable as possible to get a bunch of them out there.”
For engineers, that’s exciting, said Rebecca Ciez, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Purdue University. But she doubted it would appeal to consumers.
First, the financial returns batteries can offer consumers aren’t assured. “There is value to the grid for those services,” she said, “but I don’t know for the average person if it’s going to be a huge amount of money.” Utilities pay at most a few hundred dollars annually to tap into homeowners’ batteries, she said, a figure that could decline as more home batteries come online. We also don’t know how much homeowners will value battery services in appliances such as heat pumps and dryers.
Second, one big battery may beat many small ones. Millions of electric vehicles will sit in people’s garages. With the right hardware, these could also act as home battery backups. A “substantial share” of homes will adopt energy storage in the coming decade, Ciez predicted, but small appliances may struggle to compete against massive 60 to 80 kWh EV packs.
Battery stoves aren’t yet for everyone. Prices are still high. And while Copper and Impulse offer robust guarantees, covering their batteries for years, neither company has a long track record.
Impulse says its cooktop is the first battery-integrated appliance in the United States certified to UL 858, the standard household electric range standard, along with its battery, inverter and controls. Copper says its battery and charger are UL-certified, but it is waiting for UL to update an appliance standard specifically for battery-equipped stoves. The two companies are also locked in patent litigation over their core technology, a fight that could constrain their respective businesses.
For early adopters, though, Copper and Impulse are the first to offer top-tier induction performance — and an end to gas stoves’ indoor air pollution — with the benefits of battery power.
For luxury buyers who prize raw performance and precision, these stoves undercut comparable ranges and cooktops that cost far more. For anyone staring down a hefty electrician’s bill to run a 240-volt line for a conventional induction range, the premium can even amount to a discount.
“Right now we are definitely a luxury stove,” said Nowinski, “the Lamborghini of induction.” (Copper, for what it’s worth, has been called the Tesla of induction stoves.) Impulse is already broadening its options by licensing its technology to Zephyr and Thor Kitchen, two established kitchen appliance brands.
Ultimately, landlords, not homeowners, may turn out to be the biggest customers. Copper in particular is inking deals with multifamily-building owners, who can use these appliances to skip electrical upgrades and add in-suite amenities like a washer-dryer on the stove’s old 240-volt outlet. Copper’s largest deal to date is a $32 million commitment from New York state’s power and energy authorities, along with the New York City Housing Authority, to develop and pilot an induction stove for public housing. The agencies have an option to buy up to 10,000 units, at an expected cost of under $3,000 each, after initial trials and safety certification.
The appliance battery insurgency is already spreading beyond stoves. Carrier, which makes equipment like air conditioners, heat pumps and furnaces, is piloting air conditioners with batteries and smart controls that shift loads on demand.
Consolidated Edison is enrolling New York City renters to plug window AC units into portable batteries to ease strain during peak hours. And dozens of state and utility programs are recruiting home batteries to support the grid by offering to pay to tap them when needed.
For now, these new stovetops are still a novelty. If the concept proves its worth, the idea of appliances that power themselves — and the rest of the grid — may just be the way homes work.
