iPhone 20 on the way with lofty new features

An impressive anniversary is on the horizon for the iPhone, and Apple might be pulling out new designs to celebrate it.

If the final product matches the rumors, Apple’s rumored 20th anniversary iPhone could be the company’s most ambitious redesign in a decade.

Expected to launch in the fall of 2027, the device—rumored to skip the iPhone 19 designation and become either the iPhone 20 or iPhone XX—is still more than a year away, meaning many of the reported features could change before release.

Still, multiple reports suggest Apple is planning its biggest overhaul since the iPhone X.

The New Features

Among the most eye-catching rumored upgrades is a curved all-glass design with an edge-to-edge OLED display wrapping around all four sides of the device, leaving almost no visible bezels.

Apple is also said to be working toward moving Face ID beneath the display, eliminating the need for the current camera cutout, although some analysts believe that technology may not be ready in time.

The anniversary model could also introduce Apple’s own custom stacked image sensor, replacing Sony-made sensors used in previous iPhones.

The new camera hardware is expected to improve dynamic range and image quality, particularly in challenging lighting conditions.

Other rumored features include solid-state haptic buttons that replace traditional mechanical controls, a second-generation 2-nanometer A21 processor and high-bandwidth memory designed to boost the device’s artificial intelligence performance.

Battery life could receive a significant upgrade as well if Apple adopts pure silicon battery technology, which offers greater energy density than conventional lithium-ion cells.

Some reports have also suggested reverse wireless charging, under-display audio and a stronger version of Ceramic Shield, though those features remain less certain.

‘A ton of rumors’

Commenters on Reddit’s r/Apple forum, however, were skeptical about many of the features, especially given the nature of tech’s multi-year rollouts, which feature a lot of hype and not as much delivery.

One user described it as a two-step process: “Make up a ton of rumors” and “slowly shoot them down over the next year.”

“Next year’s iPhone is always the one to get,” another commenter mused, while a third added, “Curved screens looked cool but were honestly kind of a pain in practice.

“Accidental touches, weak point of failure, and yeah, the screen protector thing was a nightmare. Plus flat screens are just more practical and cheaper to manufacture too.”

Finally, one user pointed out that Apple has been working on solid-state buttons for a long time, and it “never works out. I wonder if they’ll finally do it this time.”
