How to use your iPhone's magnifying glass app to help you see better

You might not need one every day but now and again, a magnifying glass can certainly come in handy, say to read the small print, check for ticks or look at a scratch in some furniture.

Few people have one to hand, though, which is why the app on the iPhone or iPad is particularly useful - turning the devices into magnifying glasses.

The Magnifier app is pre-installed on every iOS device that has a rear-facing camera. The fastest way to find it is to use the Spotlight search, which you access by swiping down on the home screen. Enter "magnifying glass" and tap the icon that appears.

Hold the iPhone about 20 centimeters above the object you want to magnify. Use the zoom slider on the screen to enlarge or reduce the section you want to focus on. The iPhone automatically switches between lenses to give you the best image quality.

A tap on the display focusses the camera on the desired area. You can also improve the image quality by adjusting the brightness and contrast or activating the iPhone lamp as an additional light source. These functions can be accessed via the icons under the zoom slider.

To further optimize your display of the object, try using color filters via the third button. The inverted greyscale mode is particularly useful as it makes light text on a dark background easier to read.

If you want to save the enlarged image, take a screenshot by pressing the volume up and power buttons at the same time. Unfortunately, the still image button in the Magnifier app itself saves the image without the optimizations previously made.

You can set up a link to access the magnifying glass faster, either by adding the magnifying glass to the control center or activating the shortcut via the side button or the home button. Either way, you will always have a magnifying glass to hand.
