How to use Do Not Disturb mode on Android

Dealing with a constant stream of notifications is annoying. That's why the best Android phones offer Do Not Disturb mode, which silences your phone for those moments when you don't need the distraction. The handy thing about Do Not Disturb is that it isn't just an On/Off switch. If you're in a meeting or driving a long distance, you can set Do Not Disturb to turn back on at a specific time.

This guide shows you how to enable and use Do Not Disturb on Android.

Follow our guide to mute a single app's notifications if a specific app bothers you.

How to turn on Do Not Disturb mode

For these steps, we used a Google Pixel 6 running Android 13. However, as long as you run a recent version of Android, these steps will work regardless of the device. (If you're stuck, search for Do Not Disturb in your Setting app's search bar.)

    1. Open the Settings app.
    2. Scroll down and tap Sound & Vibration.
    3. Tap Do Not Disturb.

  1. Tap the Turn on now button at the top of your screen.

You can make an exception to Do Not Disturb. You'll find the options below the Turn on now button. Tap each option and then select the contacts, conversations, or apps that can interrupt Do Not Disturb when it's active.

There's also a quick settings option that toggles Do Not Disturb on and off. You can access this by swiping down from the top of your screen and tapping the Do Not Disturb button. Long press this button to find the full DND settings.

How to schedule Do Not Disturb

If you want to automatically mute your phone's notification pings and buzzes during set hours, go to the Schedules option in your phone's Do Not Disturb menu.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Scroll down and tap Sound & Vibration.
  3. Tap Do Not Disturb.
  4. Scroll down and tap Schedules.
  5. You're greeted with a list of named schedules. Toggle the switch next to any you want to enable.
    • Sleeping: Silence notifications during manually set hours.
    • Event: Silence notifications during calendar events.
    • Gaming: Silence notifications while you're playing games on your phone.
    • Driving Mode: Silence notifications when your phone detects you're driving.
    • Add more: Create events and times to set a schedule for.

To customize these schedules, tap the schedule's name. For example, you can change what time you go to sleep or choose a series of recurring events.

Set your mind free from notifications

Notifications are a necessary evil, so it's good to take a break once in a while. Once you've set enough breaks throughout the day, relax with some of the best games for Android.
