What To Know

  • Soft Reset: Press and hold both the Digital Crown and Noise Control buttons. Once the LED flashes amber, release the buttons.
  • Hard Reset: Hold down both buttons at the same time until the LED flashes amber, followed by white; release after you see the white flashing light.
  • Before performing any reset, ensure your AirPods Max are fully charged to avoid issues.

AirPods Max can sometimes experience connectivity issues, audio glitches, and occasional freezes.

To restore them to peak performance, read our guide below. We'll walk you through the steps to both restart and fully reset your AirPods Max so that you can enjoy your favorite playlist uninterrupted.

How to Soft Reset Your AirPods Max

The easiest way to reset your AirPods Max is with a soft reset. Follow the instructions below to do it.

First, make sure your AirPods Max are fully charged.

Press and hold the Noise Control button and Digital Crown at the same time for up to 20 seconds. They're on top of the right headphone.

Apple, Inc.

Once the LED on the bottom of the right ear cup flashes amber, release both buttons.

Your AirPods Max will restart.

If your AirPods Max headphones are unresponsive, the standard restart process likely won't work. In that case, you need to try a hard reset, which will restore the device to factory settings.

How to Hard Reset AirPods Max

We recommend performing a hard reset if you're experiencing persistent issues or looking to sell your AirPods Max. This process restores the device to default settings free of customizations like equalizer balance or max volume controls.

First, fully charge your AirPods Max.

Hold the Noise Control and Digital Crown buttons down simultaneously until the light flashes white. It will flash amber first, but keep holding them down when you see that.

Once the LED indicator flashes white, release both buttons to reset your AirPods Max to factory settings.

After a factory/hard reset, you'll need to re-pair the headphones to your devices (assuming you aren't selling your AirPods Max).

Why Would I Reset My AirPods Max?

Resetting AirPods Max is an excellent way to resolve unexpected errors such as unresponsive controls, connectivity issues, or the occasional glitch. Your audio may even cut in and out. Doing a hard or factory reset also makes it easy to pair your AirPods Max with different devices.

You should also do a hard reset of your AirPods Max if you're selling or otherwise passing on your AirPods Max. They don't hold any personal information like your iPhone would, but starting them from factory settings will make it easier for the new owner to customize them to their preferences.

After a hard reset, AirPods Max will no longer recognize any previously paired devices, custom controls/gestures, or links to your iCloud account.
