How to put iPhone in recovery mode

If you find yourself locked out of your iPhone due to a forgotten passcode or other issues, putting your device into recovery mode can help you restore it. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Connect to a Computer: First, make sure you have access to a computer (either a Mac or a PC). If you’re using a PC, ensure that it has Windows 10 or later installed, and either the Apple Devices app or iTunes. You’ll also need the cable that came with your iPhone (or another compatible cable) to connect it to the computer.

  2. Turn Off Your iPhone:

    • For iPhone 8 and newer models (including iPhone SE 2nd and 3rd generation):
      • Press and hold both the side button and the Volume Down button until the power-off slider appears.
    • For iPhone 7, iPhone 6s, and earlier models:
      • Press and hold the side button until the power-off slider appears.
      • For iPhone SE 1st generation and iPhone 5s, press and hold the top button instead.
    • Drag the slider to turn off your iPhone and wait for it to shut down completely.
  3. Enter Recovery Mode:

    • Connect your iPhone to the computer using the USB-to-Lightning cable.
    • Press and release the Volume Up button, then quickly press and release the Volume Down button.
    • Finally, press and hold the Side button (or Home button for older models) while keeping your iPhone connected to the computer.
    • Continue holding the button until you see the Recovery Mode screen (it will display an image of a computer and cable).
  4. Restore or Update:

    • Once in recovery mode, you can use iTunes or Finder (depending on your computer) to restore your iPhone.
    • Follow the prompts to either update your iPhone (which keeps your data intact) or restore it (which erases all data and settings).
    • You’ll need your Apple ID and password to set up your iPhone again after the process is complete.
    • If you’ve previously backed up your iPhone, you can restore your data from the backup. Otherwise, you can set it up as a new device and download any data from iCloud.

Remember that entering recovery mode is a troubleshooting step, and it’s essential to follow the instructions carefully. If you encounter any issues, consider seeking assistance from an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
