How to fix a freeze laptop

A laptop freeze usually comes from one of a few causes: a single app locking up, Windows Explorer crashing, a graphics driver glitch, or a full system hang caused by low resources, overheating, or corrupted files. Below is a clear, ordered set of steps you can follow to diagnose and fix it.

Check if only one app is frozen

Start Here

This tells you whether the issue is small or system‑wide.

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager

  • If Task Manager opens, look for apps marked Not Responding

  • Select the frozen app → choose End task

  • If Task Manager does NOT open, the whole system is frozen

    Restart Windows Explorer

    Fixes freezes where the taskbar, Start menu, or desktop stop responding.

    Task Manager → Processes → find Windows Explorer

    • Right‑click Windows Explorer → Restart

    • If missing: Task Manager → Run new task → type explorer.exe → Enter

    Reset the graphics driver

    Common Display Fix

    Useful when the screen is black, flickering, or frozen but sound continues.

    Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B

    • Screen will blink briefly

    • Restores the display driver without rebooting

    Force a restart if the system is completely frozen

    Caution

    A full lockup requires a hard reboot.

    • Hold the laptop’s power button for ~10 seconds

    • Wait a few seconds → turn it back on

    • You may lose unsaved work (use only when necessary)

    Check for overheating

    Frequent Cause

    High temperatures can cause sudden freezes.

    • Feel if the laptop is unusually hot

    • Ensure vents are not blocked

    • Clean dust from vents if possible

    • Avoid using laptop on soft surfaces (bed, blanket)

    Free up disk space

    Low storage (especially on C:) can cause system-wide freezing.

    Settings → System → Storage

    • Ensure at least 15–20% free space

    • Clear Temporary files, Recycle Bin, unused apps

    Install Windows updates

    Buggy updates or missing patches can cause freezes.

    Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates

    • Install all updates

    • Restart the laptop afterward

    Scan for malware

    Malware can consume resources or corrupt system files.

    Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection

    • Run a Full scan

    • Remove any detected threats

    Repair system files

    Corrupted Windows files can cause random freezes.

    Run Command Prompt (Admin)

    • Type: sfc /scannow → Enter

    • After it finishes: type DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth → Enter

    Roll back recent drivers or updates

    If freezes started after an update, revert it.

    Device Manager → Display adapters → your GPU

    • Right‑click → Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver

    • Or uninstall the latest Windows update via Settings → Windows Update → Update histor
