All the Ways to Turn Off Your iPhone in iOS 18
If you just bought your very first iPhone, you're probably not sure how to turn it off. You may have pressed the side button only to realize it doesn't bring up the shutdown screen. But don't worry it's quite simple! And there are multiple ways to turn your iPhone off.
Turn Off Your iPhone With Physical Buttons
If you have an iPhone X or newer model with Face ID, pressing the side button (aka the power button) activates Siri on your iPhone instead of turning it off. So, how do you actually power your iPhone off?
First, press and hold the side button and either of the volume buttons. When the shutdown screen appears, release the buttons and drag the power slider to the right. According to Apple, the shutdown process takes about 30 seconds to complete.
You can also press and release the volume up and then the volume down button, followed by holding the side button until you see the Apple logo. This method immediately stops all running apps and forces your iPhone to restart. This is the same as pulling the plug on a computer, so do it only if your iPhone freezes.
Turn Off Your iPhone From the Control Center
Starting with iOS 18, you can also turn off your iPhone from the new and improved Control Center. This can be handy if the hardware buttons on your iPhone are malfunctioning.
To do this, simply swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen to access the Control Center and long-press the power icon in the top-right corner. Once you see the power off slider, drag it to your right to turn off your iPhone.
Use Siri to Power Off Your iPhone
Apple's voice assistant can power off any iPhone with a simple command. Just say, "Hey Siri, turn off my iPhone," and confirm hands-free with a "Yes" or hit Power Off in the prompt.
This even works with your iPhone in Airplane Mode because shutting down is among the requests Siri can process without an internet connection.
Power Off Your iPhone via Settings
Another way to power off your iPhone without using the hardware buttons involves using the Settings app. Simply go to Settings > General > Shut Down and then drag the power off slider to confirm the action.
How to Power Off an Unresponsive iPhone
Although there are several ways to turn off your iPhone, you may encounter difficulties if the iPhone doesn't respond to button presses or the display becomes unresponsive. In that case, you'll need to wait for the battery to drain.
If the problem persists when you restart, you should force restart your iPhone and enter recovery mode to restore it using a computer.
You don't need to restart your iPhone often, but doing so at least once a week can be beneficial. A quick restart quits all running apps, clears the memory, and reloads iOS, which often resolves performance, battery usage, and software issues. It's a good idea to memorize some, if not all, of the methods mentioned above so that turning off your iPhone becomes second nature.
