7 Street Photography Tips That Actually Work

Street photography is one of the most popular genres of the medium, with many people beginning their careers with the segment and then branching out to other spaces. However, there are others who wish to continue with street photography but find it hard to express themselves with the medium. So, to help those who feel stuck, we bring to you a few tips that can make this journey worthwhile. Of course, practice is the key to reaching the ladder of success.

Seeing it Differently

Street photography is all about intention. What do you wish to say? Making images from your viewfinder, without truly moving yourself, will not help. Sometimes, you need to get low to make your surroundings stand out. Or you can stand at a height to make things appear smaller. Sometimes, by using reflection, you can change things. Like in this image, you have foreground, midground, and background for visual depth. Even the orientation of the image makes a huge difference. Keep this in mind while making images.

Overcast is Good

While many photographers run after the golden hour, an overcast day is not as bad as you think. That’s because you get softer light and more mature colors. Harsh light can wash out details, especially in highlights and shadows. So, you can avoid direct sunlight for better results.

85mm Can Do Wonders

While many photographers prefer 35mm or 50mm, an 85mm can be used for street photography. That’s because it can build that space between your subjects and yourself, and also offer soft bokeh when needed. So, while many people want to go close, you can always use a longer lens to compress things and make them work for you. The image above shows compression, but due to the wide aperture, everything is blurred out.

The Camera Never Stops

Never turn off your camera, and never shoot in burst mode. The former helps you to get the shot when you come across something when least expected, and the latter will save you from editing 500 images of the same scene. Be conservative when you shoot, think like an analog photographer, and then release the shutter. These things will help you to be attentive and train yourself to shoot differently than others.

Staying in the Zone

Instead of making images on the go and on the move, take this opportunity to find a spot and wait around there to get a picture. The sheer number of people coming and going will help you gradually gauge the kind of picture you wish to make. And when the time comes, you have one great shot over 50 average ones. Let this be a gentle reminder that great street photography doesn’t require rushing around—it requires observation.

Same Spot, Different Day

Seasons are often changing, and with that, the mood and look of the place. Sometimes, the dramatic light during summer may make a spot look lively, but other times, it may appear gloomy. Some colors may pop, while others appear lackluster. Every time, with a different atmosphere, you may get a photograph that’s different from the last. Once you get this difference, your work will transform exponentially.

It’s Okay to Let Go

Every moment can’t be captured, and sometimes, you have to let something go due to your personal morals. For instance, photographing someone asleep on the road, can be skipped. There are too many images like that and you do not need to add to it. Sometimes, we make images that we enjoy, and if it doesn’t make you feel the magic, it’s better to skip to the next.

These street photography tips can be helpful to newbies and those who have been photographing for a while. Either way, you must continue with conviction if you wish to go somewhere.
